View of Albert Church

View of Albert Church

wall lights
Destruction of Albert Church, France, during World War I. At the top of a slight rise there are the ruins of a very tall building. It is a little difficult to work out what remains but most of the roof has gone and the interior is bare, only the walls remain standing. Light is shining through the tiers of columns and arched windows giving a dramatic atmosphere to the image. Further down the hill the road is closely lined with ruined buildings. Looking at the church through these gives the picture an oppressive feeling. Albert, France, suffered a great deal of devastation during the course of the war as it was often jammed between the German and Allied lines. There are many views of Albert in the Haig Collection which show the same situation- a depressing mass of destruction.
