A.C.S. steam engine driver receives news from home

Home Lights
Two men standing next to a steam engine. The man on the left is preoccupied with reading a letter. The other man appears to be cleaning or adjusting one of the lights at the front of the vehicle. Embossed on the front of the engine is 'THE FODEN STEAM WAGON.' They have stopped on a road bordered on the left by a bank of earth, and on the right by trees and bushes. It is a beautiful, sunny day and the road is dry and dusty. This image is a good example of the type often used by the Government and Military as propaganda. Along with the flippant caption, it offered people a light-hearted and misleading insight into life at the Front. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. BATTLE OF MENIN ROAD. Scene near Zillebeke. An A.C.S. steam engine driver receives news from home. Letters at the front are always welcomed by Tommy. They prove a welcome relief from the ever present topic.'] digital.nls.uk/74547220 Image by National Library of Scotland
