Scene in one of the wards

Scene in one of the wards

Interior Lighting
The interior of a hospital ward. The ward is light and airy, with whitewashed walls and a generous number of windows letting in daylight. Rather flimsy looking hospital beds line both sides of the room. There are patients in most of the beds. A man in a bed on the left has a large frame, placed under the covers, protecting his legs. Four men in uniform and one man dressed in white stand next to the beds. 'South African Native Hospitals' were set up to treat wounded black South Africans at the Front. Whilst a large number of black South Africans participated in the war, they were restricted to non-combatant roles such as labouring as a result of South Africa's segregationist policy of the day.
