Scene through a shell hole

wall lights
Wounded soldiers moving through a ravaged area, during World War I. The edges of the photograph are the wall which surrounds the shell hole. The edges of the brick are still visible. Through the triangular gap, the railway line and countryside can be seen. At the edge of the railway, collapsed masonry and debris is piled up. There is an open railway carriage in view in which soldiers with various head wounds are sitting or standing. John Warwick Brooke is thought to have taken this picture. This sort of image was both familiar and yet still startling. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Scene through a shell hole. Troops marching in formation down the curve of a short slope to meet their colleagues at the bottom. These troops are lined up in neat rows in the flat basin at the bottom of the hill. In front of the rows a wall has been built out of sandbags which splits the basin in half. There are also a few logs lying around. The soldiers seem to be wearing light-coloured uniforms and tin helmets. John Warwick Brooke is believed to have taken this photograph. Germany declared war on 9 March 1916 and Austro-Hungary followed on 15 Mar 1916 after Portugal refused to return German ships which they had seized. Scene through a shelled house

wall lights
Two soldiers loading a light railway. They are standing on top of the loaded cargo. The scene is viewed through a badly shelled house, with only sections of the outer brick wall remaining. The foreground is covered in bricks and rubble. Behind the railway more shelled houses are visible. A small raised wooden platform has been placed next to the railway, making loading easier. The top of the photograph is framed by the splintered remains of a roof. Secure communication and supply lines were vital to an army's success. Light railways were reasonably quick to construct and enabled the transportation of arms and equipment, to and from the front line. View of Albert Church

View of Albert Church

wall lights
Destruction of Albert Church, France, during World War I. At the top of a slight rise there are the ruins of a very tall building. It is a little difficult to work out what remains but most of the roof has gone and the interior is bare, only the walls remain standing. Light is shining through the tiers of columns and arched windows giving a dramatic atmosphere to the image. Further down the hill the road is closely lined with ruined buildings. Looking at the church through these gives the picture an oppressive feeling. Albert, France, suffered a great deal of devastation during the course of the war as it was often jammed between the German and Allied lines. There are many views of Albert in the Haig Collection which show the same situation- a depressing mass of destruction. Scene in a captured village

Scene in a captured village

wall lights
Two British soldiers sitting on the ground, leaning against a brick building. They are both looking at a small booklet or pamphlet, and appear to be amused by what they are reading. The man on the right has a bandage wrapped around his head. The ground they are sitting on is dry and dusty, probably a welcome change from the mud that pervaded much of the Front. Painted on the building is the German word 'Ottskrankenstube' alongside a cross. The nickname 'Tommy' entered into general usage after the Rudyard Kipling poems, 'Tommy' and 'To Thomas Atkins' (1892), which pay homage to the sturdy character of the average British soldier. It is possible this image, along with its light-hearted and condescending caption, was used as propaganda by the Government and Military. Injecting humour into the words people read and censoring the pictures people saw, deflected attention away from the negative and terrible aspects of war. [Original reads: 'BRITISH OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT. Scene in a captured village. A wounded Tommy and another enjoying a joke in a book. Fairview Avenue School in Grandview, 1917

Until Upper Arlington opened its school system in October 1918, children in the community attended the Grandview schools. Enrollment in the Grandview school district was increasing rapidly, leading to a growing concern about overcrowding, particularly within the Grandview high school. In 1918, the Grandview school system consisted of a four-room Fifth Avenue school for grades one through three, the pictured eight-room Fairview Avenue school for grades four through eight, and a four-room Fairview Avenue high school. The Fairview Avenue school was considered quite modern for its time with modern heating, lighting, and ventilation. The planning and cooking of the school lunches was done by the students in the domestic department and the bookkeeping classes kept the cafeteria accounts. Trinity College Dublin, late 19th century

Very bustling scene at College Green in Dublin (at 13:16 o' the clock?). There are surely clues in this streetscape that can help us narrow down the date... This photo was taken probably by Robert French, chief photographer of William Lawrence Photographic Studios of Dublin. You can compare this view of Trinity College with its companion photo taken approximately 90 years later as part of the Lawrence Photographic Project 1990/1991, where one thousand photographs from the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland were replicated a hundred years later by a team of volunteer photographers, thereby creating a record of the changing face of the selected locations all over Ireland. For further information on the Lawrence Photographic Project, read all about it on our NLI Blog. Description: This composite image from Chandra X-ray data (colored blue) and optical light data from the Hubble (red, green and yellow) shows a divided neighborhood where some 200 hot, young, massive stars reside. Bubbles in the cooler gas and dust have been generated by powerful stellar winds, which are then filled with hot, X-ray emitting gas. Scientists find the amount of hot gas detected in the bubbles on the right side corresponds to the amount entirely powered by winds from the 200 hot massive stars. The situation is different on the left side where the amount of X-ray gas cannot explain the brightness of the X-ray emission. The bubbles on this left side appear to be much older and were likely created and powered by young stars and supernovas in the past. Creator/Photographer: Chandra X-ray Observatory NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was launched and deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. The mirrors on Chandra are the largest, most precisely shaped and aligned, and smoothest mirrors ever constructed. Chandra is helping scientists better understand the hot, turbulent regions of space and answer fundamental questions about origin, evolution, and destiny of the Universe. The images Chandra makes are twenty-five times sharper than the best previous X-ray telescope. Soldiers eating dinner at a makeshift table outside of their dugout. The photograph is taken from a higher point than the dinners and so the whole scene is at a slight angle. There is a dugout entrance in the background which is framed with blankets and canvas. Two soldiers have just emerged. At the front there is a rickety table covered in a white cloth with five soldiers sitting round it. It is thought that this light-hearted scene was captured by John Warwick Brooke. 2 Lieutenant George Arthur Nicholls

2 Lieutenant George Arthur Nicholls

Home Lights
Royal Horse Artillery Second Lieutenant George Arthur Nicholls served with the Royal Horse Artillery. He was a member of the Officers' Training Corps in Berkhamsted prior to the First World War. He joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a private on 14 August 1914, aged 19. He left for France with the British Expeditionary Force in September 1914, returning to Britain on 3 June 1915. On 5 July 1915, he was discharged from the Honourable Artillery Company, taking up a commission with the Special Reserve, Royal Field Artillery. He suffered a machine-gun bullet wound to the right wrist on 30 April 1916 in Albert, France, while he was serving with C Battery, 95th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. The bullet entered the forearm just above the wrist, emerging at the base of the thumb. Nicholls spent time at Lady Cooper's Hospital in Winchester in May 1916 and was granted a leave of absence from May until August 1916. In September 1916 he was deemed fit for home service and was posted to 5B Reserve Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, at Ballincollig for 6 months of light duty. He attended regular medical boards for updates on his wrist injury as well as undertaking regular courses of gymnastics to aid his recuperation. In January 1917, he was considered fit for general service. Nicholls challenged the non-award of Wound Gratuity in March 1917 and requested another medical board if the War Office would not change its mind on the basis of the evidence they already had. Nicholls was killed in action on 9 April 1917 at Arras, aged 22, while serving as a second lieutenant with the 15th (Warwick) Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery. On 9 May, his father wrote to the War Office because the bulk of his sons effects had not reached him. He stated that, 'I need hardly say how very much it means to us to get them.' He also describes how the haversack containing a revolver of a man who was killed at the same time as his son (Second Lieutenant P B Duckworth) had mistakenly been returned to him and wondered what to do with it. Effects of his son missing included a wrist watch, pocket wallet with photos and letters, silver cigarette case, small teddy bear, clasp knife, riding cane, revolver, and binoculars. A response was sent on 18 May 1917 from the War Office to explain that the items had still not been received there but that, 'Owing to the abnormal conditions attached to active service delay in the recovery and transmission of such effects frequently unavoidable, but if any further articles of the late officer's property are any time forthcoming they will be at once forwarded to you.' Nicholls' father was told to dispose of any cartridges and return the haversack of the other officer. In June, his father wrote to the Director of Graves Registration at the War Office having been told that the Burial Officer would have his son's effects. An internal investigation revealed that effects were handed to Second Lieutenant P G Clark of 20th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, one of the officers in charge of the cemetery where Nicholls was buried. Clark denied having seen any of the items bar those which were sent. Second Lieutenant Nicholls is buried at Beaurains Road Cemetery. Earth and Moon As Viewed From Mars

Earth and Moon As Viewed From Mars

Home Lights
(May 8, 2003) This is the first image of Earth ever taken from another planet that actually shows our home as a planetary disk. Because Earth and the Moon are closer to the Sun than Mars, they exhibit phases, just as the Moon, Venus, and Mercury do when viewed from Earth. As seen from Mars by the NASA Mars Global Surveyor on May 8, 2003, at 13:00 GMT (6:00 a.m. PDT), Earth and the Moon appeared in the evening sky. This Earth/Moon image has been specially processed to allow both Earth (with an apparent magnitude of -2.5) and the much darker Moon (with an apparent magnitude of 0.9) to be visible together. The bright area at the top of the image of Earth is cloud cover over central and eastern North America. Below that, a darker area includes Central America and the Gulf of Mexico. The bright feature near the center right of the crescent Earth consists of clouds over nort hern South America. The image also shows the Earth-facing hemisphere of the Moon, since the Moon was on the far side of Earth as viewed from Mars. The slightly lighter tone of the lower portion of the image of the Moon results from the large and conspicuous ray system associated with the crater Tycho. nasaimages.org/luna/servlet/detail/nasaNAS~10~10~75582~18... Gerry Ward kindly confirmed that the large framed image of the factory is at Kilbowie Street, Clydebank in Scotland, with its gorgeous clock tower. No excuse for Singer employees who lived nearby to be late for work! Gerry also translated our Russian Poster which reads "Компания Зингеръ Швейная машиъі" which means "The Singer Sewing Machine Company". Driver of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry cranking up an ambulance

Driver of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry cranking up an ambulance

Home Lights
Like a tram back in Britain, this ambulance has a humorous destination chalked on to its front panel where the windscreen would normally be. This destination is 'Blighty', an affectionate slang term for 'home'. As the war staggered on, British soldiers became increasingly keen on getting a 'cushy' (a light wound), that would allow them to get back to Blighty, hopefully until the war finished. The word 'blighty' is Hindustani for 'home'. In those days, a separate starting-crank tool was needed to start the engine. Established by Lord Kitchener in 1907 to form a professional medical link between the wounded men on the front line and the field hospitals, the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) performed a wide range of front-line duties including driving, nursing and cooking. Most of the early female recruits were drawn from the ranks of the upper classes. However, many males, often conscientious objectors, also served in this organisation as drivers and nurses. Original Caption: Group picking shrimp. Olga, 5 years old on the end was helping mother. I tried to get her photo at home when they stopped working but the child stubbornly refused to be taken. Her mother said, She's ugly, but it seemed to me that the child could be expected to be tired out after work that began so early. Work was light and only a small crew was working. Canaries who live aboard Ambulance Train to cheer wounded with song

Canaries who live aboard Ambulance Train to cheer wounded with song

Home Lights
Two nurses and their canaries posed by their train, France, during World War I. This photograph was taken at an angle down the side of the train. As a result the image is dominated by overpowering dark metal-sheeting. At two intervals along the composition nurses are leaning out of open windows. Their uniforms are clean and sharp, and they are intent on the cages they are holding. The cages are on display and hold canaries which apparently were used to alleviate the boredom of the patients. This photograph would have sent an ideal propaganda message. The implication that proper, well-organised and efficient care was provided for those at the Front would have reassured those at home. The canaries meanwhile provide a light-hearted note to the seriousness of war injuries. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE.
