Our men occupying a German trench

Our men occupying a German trench

landscape lighting
This eye-catching image is thought to have been captured by the official war photographer, John Warwick Brooke. The flatness of the landscape with the scar of the trench running through it, along with the quality of the light, convey quite a dramatic but arid atmosphere. This is further heightened by the dead bodies, presumably German, in the crater at the front of the picture. This would have been ideal propaganda material, not just for those at home but for other soldiers who were perhaps having a less successful time. Victorious, relaxed soldiers occupying enemy territory relays a very positive message. Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. Our men occupying a German trench.'] digital.nls.uk/74548256 Image by National Library of Scotland
